The Spanish were the first Europeans to settle in Coastal California in the Sixteen Century. As a result, their influence over California’s home Mediterranan architecture can still be seen today. A tremendous part of the Spanish colonization effort in California was the establishment of missions which was led by Father Junipero Serra in the Eighteenth Century. Serra founded the first mission in San Diego which is the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá in 1769. The San Diego Mission is on the National Register of Historic Places.
